Historically, there have been few assessment solutions available for metallic pipe materials, making them challenging to manage safely. Traditional methods, such as test pitting and desktop studies, rely on external factors to determine the condition of a metallic pipe. While these tools are useful when combined with condition assessment, they can lead to the unnecessary replacement of pipe with remaining useful life if used alone.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that 70–90 percent of replaced pipe has remaining useful life. The primary reason that pipes are replaced is due to age or failure history. Neither factor is representative of the condition of an entire pipeline. By assessing the condition of pipes first through the use of advanced technologies, utilities can use actionable data to make rehabilitation decisions. This approach helps ensure the responsible use of capital budget and can safely extend the life of pipeline assets for only a fraction of the replacement cost.
